The best mobile MOBAs

Few game genres are as dependent on playing your role on a team as they are on your own individual skills as MOBAs. The 5v5 nature of such games makes cooperation an extremely important factor in deciding which team walks away with victory, and they’re some of the most fun games to play with friends you’re on a similar mental wavelength with.

While other platforms are rich with MOBA games like Dota 2, League, and even newer titles like Deadlock, the mobile market is largely stale aside from a few titles. However, there are some hidden gems here and there, and these are the best MOBA games you can play on your phone!

7 Pokémon unite

Best for beginners

Pokemon Unite would be the perfect start if you’re not a fan of MOBAs but want to delve into the genre. The game does away with many of the complexities that come with a typical match in a MOBA, focusing instead on creating a fun gaming environment for everyone involved.

Instead of towers, there are goals with which you can score points. There’s also no Nexus or Base to destroy, so you still have a chance to win even if all hope seems lost. Overall, it’s an incredibly fun game that also gets you used to the isometric controls that MOBAs use if you’re a beginner

Touch and gesture controls

Vainglory is the only MOBA on mobile phones to offer touch-and-move compatibility as an alternative to the analog sticks commonly used in such games. This makes Vainglory the best choice for those with previous experience playing MOBAs on PC.

One thing to note is that while the servers still exist while the game is in a playable state, the company behind Vainglory has largely stopped operating them, save for a single developer. You can’t download the game in the traditional way, but once you run it, you can enjoy all the existing features like parties and skins.

5 Arena of Courage (AOV)

Oldest mobile MOBA

AOV is one of the oldest games on the MOBA market and is as old as Mobile Legends. While it may not have reached the same heights of popularity as its competitor, it has still consistently been one of the best alternatives to ML.

It’s important to note that while Tencent’s Arena of Valor started out as a global version of Honor of Kings, the two games have since become separated. Shared hero collaborations are released occasionally, but most of the players and teams behind the games are different.

4 Onmyoji Arena

Best character and kit design

Onmyoji Arena would be a solid contender for the top spot on this list if it weren’t for the fact that it has become unpopular over the years. On certain servers it has become impossible to find matches. But despite all that, Onmyoji Arena is one of the most fun MOBA games you can play today.

The character designs are second to none, and the character themes and skills are several levels above those from other games. It also features incredibly fun game modes with your friends, including certain variants where you can battle it out without having to worry about turrets or split-pushing.

3 Honor of kings

F2P friendly

Honor of Kings comes from the same people behind Arena of Valor. Although the two games are almost competitive against each other, Honor of Kings is a lot more popular after its worldwide release. It has all the usual qualities you’d expect from a MOBA, but stands out for featuring some of the most interesting character kits and designs in the genre.

The game is also incredibly F2P friendly, especially since it just launched worldwide. You can get quite a few free skins and heroes to use, something that might take some effort in other games. The user interface may be outdated for some, but the gameplay more than makes up for it.

2 Mobile Legends

Mobile Legends has dominated the mobile MOBA market since its initial release. While others like Vainglory, Wild Rift, and Honor of Kings have emerged to compete with their player base, MLBB somehow always manages to not only stay relevant but become even more popular every year.

The game features a roster of around 130 heroes, increasing every few months. It also often gets balance patches and whole hero revamps to keep the game fresh and not have overly strong heroes. Some heroes, like Fanny, are also different from the characters you would see in other MOBAs. If you’re planning to invest your time in a game that you want to make sure will remain relevant even ten years from now, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is your choice.

1 League Of Legends: Wild Rift

League mobile port

If Mobile Legends is the most popular MOBA on mobile, League of Legends dominates all other places. Wild Rift is the mobile port of League, featuring all your favorite champions, now with updated models and skill effects. The matches are shorter than their PC counterparts due to a smaller map and fit better as a mobile game that you can play at any time without having to spend too much time on it.

Being a port of the most popular MOBA on PC, the game is better balanced than its rivals. The Champions have had the longest time to test with real player data, and Riot has the money to keep improving the game. However, the game seems to have lost its spark after the first few years, with the game still not being released in certain countries. But with a company like Riot backing it and its unique roster of champions, we have high hopes for the future of the game.
