Many of our top picks below support all three platforms, although you’ll see a few notable exclusives that you should consider grabbing this Halloween.

The Room VR: a dark affair is a puzzle game that takes you back to Edwardian-era London, 1908. Take on ‘El Gigante’, brave the mad sect of Spanish villagers and step into the shoes of Special Agent Leon S. Kennedy on his mission to rescue the US President’s daughter.

Dreadhalls (Quest, PC VR)

Old, but gold, Dreadhallen traps you deep in a vast dungeon where you are tasked with exploring the enemy-inlaid labyrinth, surviving and finding a way to the surface. No fighting, lots of jump scares and just a little light to guide you. It’s one of those games that’s easy to recommend, if only for the basic shock value it continues to provide year after year.

Cosmodread

From the developer of Dreadhallen comes the sci-fi horror game from 2021 Cosmodread, which evokes much of the same horror of its predecessor. Trapped in a dying spaceship full of terrifying cosmic creatures, you must find your way back to the safety of Earth. Like inside Dreadhallen, You’ll scavenge for resources through procedurally generated room layouts, and you’ll certainly be terrified, but this time you’ll have some reliable weapons to defeat the darkness.

Silent Slayer: Vault of the Vampire (Quest, PC VR)

Vampire slayers be warned: powerful dormant monsters lurk in increasingly difficult coffins, ready to pounce and scare you to death if you so much as breathe the wrong way. Silent Slayer: Vault of the Vampire Packed with defense mechanisms designed to protect a particularly nasty vampire clan, you’ll be tasked with cutting clumsy wires, prying loose nails, and breaching protective barriers with blood magic. The exit 8 VR is a short walking simulator inspired by Japanese underground passages, liminal spaces and internet cult sensation ‘The Back Rooms’. Do you see something that is out of place? Phasmophobia (PC VR, PSVR 2 on October 29)

What bumps in the night? Ghosts. The answer is always ghosts. In this four-player co-op game, you can take on more than 20 different ghosts using a range of ghost-hunting paraphernalia, including EMF readers, spirit boxes, thermometers, night vision cameras and CCTV, so your teammate can help direct the action. With support for PC in addition to PC VR headsets, you won’t have to push your non-VR-owning friends too hard to get a gaming session this Halloween. Stranger Things VR is an absolute mental trip. Make your way through Eleven’s internal hellscape as you navigate the real world, which is less real than it sometimes seems. While it can be confusing and some of the mechanics feel experimental, it feels that way Stranger Things VR blissfully does its own thing, while sticking to a backstory you already know and love.

The Internet history of ‘The Backrooms’ has spawned a flood of games, but… Noclip VR is one of the best (and free!), allowing you and online players to explore the liminal spaces, solve puzzles, and escape whatever lurks. Always keep within earshot of your friends, otherwise they won’t hear you shouting.

The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR (PSVR 2)

Like the original PSVR fan favorite Until dawn: Bloodstream, This fast-paced roller coaster shooter on rails delivers thrills and chills, as well as a good dose of pew action. Being a PSVR 2 exclusive, it also uses eye-tracking, so don’t blink or enemies might pop up where you least suspect them. It’s shorter than we might have liked, but it’s longer than a movie and cheaper than riding a roller coaster.

Half-life Alyx (PC VR)

Don’t pretend you’ve never heard of it Half-life: Alyxbecause we know you did. But if you haven’t picked up VR’s preeminent horror shooter yet, you’re doing yourself an extreme disservice. The quarantined zone is teeming with zomboids and tactical baddies alike, though the dilapidated (and extremely detailed) Eastern Bloc-esque world should be more than enough to send shivers down your spine. And it is Half-life! In VR!

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice VR Edition (PC VR)

Spoiler for attentive readers of our horror game roundups: we never will not recommend Hellblade: Senau’s sacrifice. Set in the Orkney Islands, this terrifying action-adventure game delves into the Norse-inspired celestial realms, tasking you with battling the demons within and without. Look after: Hellblade simulates psychosis with constantly changing game geometry and disembodied voices whispering in your ears, criticizing your every move. We (and BAFTA) liked it so much, we can forgive it for being a third-person experience.
