Research shows that job seekers are making more use of artificial intelligence

JobLeads conducted research showing that 27% of Americans use AI multiple times a day, while 28% say they use AI once a day or several times a week. So how many people are using AI tools, given its ability to streamline many processes, when applying for a job?

Intrigued to explore the use of AI in job applications across US industries, JobLeads experts surveyed workers to find out how many of them were using AI in their resumes and/or cover letters, and how many of them got the job they applied for.

Topping the list is the IT and telecom sector, with 69.2% of Americans admitting to using AI in their job applications. Additionally, 67.7% of these applicants say they would use AI again in future job applications. Interestingly, a whopping 95.6% of applicants who used an AI tool reported that they were successful in securing the job they applied for – the highest percentage of any industry.

In second place is the HR sector, where 57.9% of applicants have used an AI tool in their CVs and/or cover letters. Of those, 81.8% got the job they applied for. However, 15.9% (after the charity and nonprofit sector – 33.3%) of Americans in HR say they have never used AI on a job application and are not considering doing so.

With 52.9% of Americans having used AI in their job applications, the arts and culture industry comes in third. Similar to first and second place, the majority of applicants (66.7%) were successful in getting the job they applied for. 47.1% of them say they would use AI again in the future, while 35.3% say they have not used AI but would consider doing so.

Closely followed by the financial sector, where 52.8% of employees have used an AI tool on their CVs and/or cover letters, while 73.7% secured the job they applied for. And rounding out the top five are 46.7% of applicants who used AI in their applications. This is the healthcare sector, where 68.6% of those who used an AI tool in their application were successful in securing the application.

At the bottom of the list is the Manufacturing & Utilities industry, with 20.5% of Americans admitting to using an AI tool in their job application. However, 66.7% of those who have not done so before say they would consider AI for future applications.

In first place is San Francisco, where 48% of Americans admit to using AI in their job applications. 40% of these applicants also say they would use AI again in future job applications, while 32% say they have not used AI but would consider doing so. Additionally, 75% of Fog City applicants who used an AI tool reported success in securing the application.

Jan Hendrik von Ahlen, co-founder and CEO at JobLeads shares his best practices for using AI tools when writing a resume and/or cover letter:

“The research shows that the use of AI tools significantly improves job application success rates, especially in sectors such as IT and telecom. Understanding how to use these tools effectively is critical to standing out in today’s competitive job market.

“For starters, when using AI tools for resume writing, always provide detailed and accurate input that AI can work with. You should review and edit all AI-generated content to ensure it suits your personal style, and use its suggestions to increase clarity and impact. Combine AI-generated content with your unique experiences to create an eye-catching resume that effectively showcases your skills and achievements.

“When it comes to using an AI tool for your cover letter, to increase the effectiveness of the AI, you should provide specific details such as the job description, your unique selling points, contact information, and any specific requests or criteria.

“There are four simple steps you can follow. First, enter an instruction prompt that explains what you need from the tool. Second, you paste your resume (make sure it’s up to date), while also letting the tool know that you’ll share the job description right after. Third, paste the relevant job description. And finally, carefully review the tool’s cover letter and edit it to suit your individual needs.

“It is important to note that employers often use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to manage large numbers of job applications by filtering resumes based on specific keywords and criteria. AI can help you create an ATS-friendly resume that contains the relevant keywords so it passes these filters. This not only increases the visibility of your application, but also increases your chances of getting an interview.”
