Apple today introduced a redesigned Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro chip options, and the computer gives two clues about the RAM amounts for the next 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, expected to launch tomorrow announced.

First, the base model Mac mini with the M4 chip, like the new iMac, starts with 16GB of RAM, which is double the 8GB of RAM in the equivalent previous-generation model. As has been rumored and leaked, it now seems almost certain that the next base model of the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 chip will also start with 16GB of RAM. Considering that a group of Mac fans have long criticized Apple for only having 8GB of RAM on some Macs, the increased minimum of 16GB would be a long-awaited change.

Second, all higher-end Mac mini configurations start with the M4 Pro chip with 24GB of RAM, and this upgrade will likely extend to the upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with the M4 Pro chip. Current MacBook Pro models with the M3 Pro chip start with 18 GB of RAM, so for the new models this would amount to an increase of 6 GB. The larger unified memory can benefit multitasking and Apple Intelligence performance.

Apple has yet to announce the M4 Max, so it’s unclear how much RAM that chip will support.

All this information will likely be confirmed within 24 hours.
