Apple has held an event in October three of the last four years, but is an event this month still likely after today’s surprise announcement of the iPad mini 7?
While some Apple enthusiasts believe today’s unveiling of the iPad mini 7 in a press release means it’s unlikely Apple will hold an October event this year, the announcement doesn’t completely rule out that possibility. Last year, Apple held a 30-minute virtual event on October 30 to introduce new MacBook Pro and iMac models with the M3 chip series, so another Mac-focused event in October wouldn’t be unusual.
Rumor has it that this month’s updates to the Mac lineup are more significant than those announced a year ago. In addition to updated MacBook Pro and iMac models with the M4 chips, the Mac mini is expected to get its biggest redesign since 2010, and that may be something Apple plans to highlight on video during a virtual event this month. According to rumors, the new Mac mini will be almost as small as an Apple TV, and will have two USB-C ports on the front, making it more similar to the Mac Studio.
On the other hand, Apple already unveiled the standard M4 chip in the iPad Pro earlier this year, while the M3 chip was unveiled at last year’s October event. Still, there are the more expensive M4 Pro and M4 Max chips that need to be announced.
This is not to say that Apple will definitely host an event this month. On the contrary, there is simply no reason why the early announcement of the iPad mini precludes an event.
