Electronics repair website iFixit shared a teardown video of the iPad mini 7 this weekend, and it adds some mystery to the device’s “jelly scrolling” improvements.
“Jelly scrolling” refers to screen tearing, which can cause text or images on one side of the screen to appear tilted down due to a mismatched refresh rate. It can make one side of the screen look like it’s responding faster than the other, resulting in a visual disruption that’s hard to ignore once it’s noticed. Some customers noticed the effect on the iPad mini 6 when used in portrait orientation, which led to complaints over the past three years, but not everyone noticed or was affected.
Despite an Apple spokesperson once claiming that “jelly scrolling” was “normal” behavior for iPads with LCD screens, it appears the company was still inclined to reduce the effect on the iPad mini 7. Many reviewers said “jelly scrolling” was less noticeable. or not noticeable at all on the latest iPad mini, and it appears Apple vaguely told some of these reviewers that it was making display-related changes to address the issue.
There was speculation that Apple may have rotated the display controller in the iPad mini 7 to make “jelly scrolling” less noticeable in portrait orientation, but interestingly, iFixit said that the position of the display controller has not changed compared to the iPad mini 6. The website concluded that Apple has done some unknown “tricks” to reduce “jelly scrolling”, so it still remains unclear what exactly Apple has done to fix the problem.
The teardown video also revealed that the Apple logo on the back of the iPad mini 7 can be removed, but otherwise the internal design of the device is similar to that of the iPad mini 6.
Apple released the iPad mini 7 last week, with key features like the A17 Pro chip, Apple Intelligence support, Apple Pencil Pro support and more.
