Dockcase Smart MagSafe M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure for 4K mobile filmmaking – on Kickstarter

The Dockcase Smart MagSafe M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure launched on Kickstarter supports 2230 and 2242 SSDs with capacities up to 2TB and PLP, plus a compact design. The smart screen highlights read/write speed and SSD status. Attach one magnetically to a smartphone or tablet and record in 4K 60Hz ProRes, Log and more.

Portable storage is essential when filming in 4K, especially on smartphones. Although some devices have a capacity of 1 TB, more is possible with an external storage option. We recently saw one from Lexar.

The Dockcase Smart MagSafe M2 NVMe SSD enclosure provides magnetic attachment of the drive and sufficient capacity when you add an SSD. Although it is rated at 15W, it is worth the upgrade to 100W to allow for longer battery life.

Dockcase Smart MagSafe M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure – Features

The real highlight is magnetically and via USB-C attaching the Dockcase Smart MagSafe M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure to a compatible iPhone/Android smartphone or tablet, and using it for mobile filming and photography, allowing 4K 60 Hz ProRes video up to 150 can be recorded. minutes. The aluminum alloy construction is sturdy and an advanced cooling system ensures it doesn’t overheat.

The Dockcase Smart MagSafe M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure can also be used as portable storage while organizing clips in the studio or on the go. With data transfer speeds of 10 Gbps over USB 3.2, it is also convenient to do some editing.

The smart display seems like a good concept, but only highlights read/write speed, drive status and not much else. I would like to know how much space is occupied on the disk.

Full list of features:

  • Lightweight aluminum alloy housing with an advanced cooling system.
  • MagSafe allows magnetic attachment (as opposed to using a camera or phone cage).
  • Smart display that shows SSD status and read/write speed, but not available capacity.
  • Supports 2230 and 2242 M.2 SSDs.
  • Triple data protection: power loss protection (PLP, charging and working), enhanced read-only mode and SSD status monitoring.
  • 4K 60Hz ProRes recording and storage, up to 150 minutes (iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max or newer), film also in LOG.
  • Two USB-C ports, USB 3.2 with transfer speeds of 10 Gbps.
  • Power: 15W auxiliary power and a 100W option, so you don’t have to worry about power loss while working.
  • Supports macOS, Windows, iOS, iPadOS, Android, Linux, ChromeOS, Harmony and PlayStation 5 operating system.

Small and portable

Portable storage for smartphones and cameras isn’t as portable as they are big and cumbersome. The good news is that the Dockcase Smart MagSafe M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure is both small and lightweight, especially with its round aluminum alloy construction.

It won’t weigh down the smartphone or tablet while filming, as it measures 59.3mm x 14.5mm and weighs just 53 grams (without the SSD).

Price and availability

The Kickstarter campaign for the Dockcase Smart Magsafe M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure is currently live and has far exceeded its original goal. It ends on November 8, 2024 at 9:00 AM EST. There are a few available options with a provisional delivery in January 2025 (prices are as of publication):

At the end of each crowdfunding-related article, we remind you that you should be aware of the risks of backing a project on a crowdfunding platform. Please also read the use of the platform and remember that there may be significant delays in the delivery of the product. Some projects are not completed at all.
