Alan Wake 2 Lake House DLC will be another piece of horror, with a new playable character and a new enemy type

UPDATE 18/10/24: To coincide with the release of Alan Wake 2’s Lake House DLC, Remedy is also adding a few extra goodies for players.

Deluxe Edition owners can get the Classic Wake outfit for Alan.

In addition, Alan Wake 2 will have an Assist mode. This mode gives players infinite ammo, immortality, infinite flashlights, and the ability to kill with one shot. Remedy developer Kyle Rowley also said there will be “some other gameplay tweaks and fixes.”

Original story continues below.

ORIGINAL 17/10/24: For those looking forward to returning to the rather surreal and twisted world of Alan Wake 2, that’s exactly what you’ll soon be able to do, thanks to the imminent arrival of the Lake House DLC.

During tonight’s Xbox Partner Preview Event, developer Remedy shared a short teaser for the game’s upcoming DLC, which takes place in a mysterious facility on the shores of Cauldron Lake.

In an accompanying blog post, the team elaborated on the expansion, which will put players in the shoes of FBC agent Estevez, for what Remedy calls a “true survival horror” experience for everyone. This will involve a lot of scares and overall danger, and Remedy has compared the horror levels in this DLC to those in Alan Wake 2’s Valhalla Nursing Home series.

This horror includes a new type of enemy known as the Painted. “For The Lake House, we wanted to introduce a new, different type of enemy than those in the main game,” explains Remedy’s Kyle Rowley.

“It’s important to us that our enemies follow the themes found in and around the part of the game where they’re revealed – whether that’s the water-themed enemy, the ‘Diver’ in the Valhalla Nursing Home, or the Taken Wolves found in and around the Cauldron Lake Forest.

“With that in mind, the Painted are themed around one of the core elements in the Lake House: paint! They can move in and out of the supernatural paint on surfaces, hunting the player and performing devastating melee attacks that deal significant damage.”

To tackle the Painted, Estevez will have a number of standardized firearms, but also a new FBC-specific weapon. This weapon “can be used to deal with slightly more… paranatural entities,” Rowley said.

Head writer Clay Murphy commented: “The Lake House tells the story of Officer Estevez’s visit to the Lake House facility, which takes place in parallel with the first part of the series. [Alan Wake 2 co-protagonist] Saga’s story in Alan Wake 2”. This means that by the time Saga meets Estevez in the main game, “the story of this expansion has already taken place”.

The DLC will have connections to Remedy’s Control, as well as Alan Wake 2. “Control obviously explores horror themes as well,” Rowley continued, “but because Alan Wake 2 is a survival horror game, we just felt like the world of Control offers a some pretty harrowing elements that we can lean into and scare players.”

Alan Wake 2’s Lake House DLC will be released in a few days October 22. Those who have played Alan Wake 2 can launch the expansion from the game menu, but Remedy said it is designed to fit into the main game for new players.

“Similar to the Night Springs expansion, The Lake House has been incorporated into the main game stream, so players will encounter these missions while playing the main campaign in a seamless manner,” Rowley said, adding that Remedy believes its DLC will be “in our core flow” has improved the overall pace of the game and “provides the ultimate Alan Wake 2 experience”.

As you probably already know, or suspect given the text above, The Lake House is the second DLC of Alan Wake 2. The first – Night Springs – contained three ‘What if’ stories with well-known characters, such as Rose the Waitress, the biggest Alan Wake fan of Alan Wake 2.
