Windows 11 24H2 issues disconnect internet, Wi-Fi, and network sharing and cause more BSODs

I was desperately hoping I wouldn’t write another story about how Windows 11 24H2 is destroying some PCs, but here we go. More issues have been noticed in Windows 11 24H2, including a critical bug that could cause some Intel PCs with a Z890 motherboard to crash with a Blue Screen of Death.

According to Windows Latest reports, Windows 11’s biggest update in 2024 could break internet connectivity for some hardware. We’re also seeing some reports of network sharing not working and Adobe software running slower than normal.

Let’s talk about the latest BSOD problem first. According to reports, Z890 motherboards, which can be shipped to PCs by OEMs like MSI, Asus, etc., are encountering BSODs with Windows 11 24H2 when the installation also includes the Core Ultra 200S series and the integrated Xe-LPG graphics card.

There seems to be a compatibility issue between the GPUs (integrated and discrete) causing the system to crash with BSOD. If you have a Z890 and encounter a Blue Screen of Death error, you can try these steps:

  1. Restart your PC. Press the BIOS key (usually Del or F2) during startup to enter the BIOS menu.
  2. In the BIOS, go to the ‘Advanced’ section, find ‘Internal graphics’ and set it to ‘Disabled’.
  3. Save these settings by pressing F10 and then restart. The GPU should now work for display output and will not cause blue screen errors.

You can also go to the ASUS website (or another manufacturer’s website), find the BIOS update for your motherboard (make sure it is version 08xx or newer) and download it. You will need the EZ Flash tool to install this update, or you can just use the ZIP file as is; you don’t need to unpack it.

After installation, restart Windows 11 for the new BIOS version to take effect.

We are also seeing reports of a Blue Screen of Death error affecting some Lenovo, Asus VivoBook and devices with WD SSD. Microsoft is taking steps to block the upgrade on affected hardware, but some of you may accidentally encounter the problem when you force install Windows 11 24H2. Therefore, we recommend that you do not force the upgrade.

Even if you manage to install Windows 11 24H2, some of you may encounter other problems.

Windows 11 24H2 causes network problems with Ethernet and Wi-Fi

After upgrading to Windows 11 24H2, many users on Microsoft’s forums and Feedback Hub have reported that there is a critical issue with certain Ethernet and wireless configurations that is causing PCs to lose internet access.

Instead of receiving a valid IP address from the router or DHCP server, Windows 11 24H2 automatically assigns an IP address starting with 169. As a result, the device fails to obtain an IP address and cannot connect to Ethernet or Wi-Fi, leaving people without internet.

One user told WindowsLatest that they tried updating network drivers, updating firmware, and resetting network settings, but these steps did not help.

Some have found that manually setting a static IP address causes the network connection to work, which seems to indicate a problem with the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) service in Windows 11 24H2.

Windows 11 24H2 network problem

In some cases, network adapters may appear disabled in the Network Settings of Control Panel, even though they appear as enabled in Device Manager.

When users try to enable these adapters, they are immediately disabled, especially when an Ethernet cable is connected. The Wi-Fi option is sometimes completely missing from the notification area and network settings, leaving only Bluetooth connections visible.

Several users discovered that the problem may be related to the WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service (WinHTTPAutoProxySvc). This service appeared to be disabled after the update. By modifying the Windows registry to remove dependencies on this service, some users were able to restore their network connectivity.

Specifically, editing the registry key on:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WcmSvc

And removing WinHTTPAutoProxySvc from the DependOnService value allowed the Windows Connection Manager and WLAN AutoConfig services to start correctly.

However, this is not ideal for everyone.

Some people noticed that the WinHTTPAutoProxySvc service was disabled again after a restart. Others found that the problem could be related to DHCP option 43 on their DHCP server, something people can disable, but again, it’s not an ideal option for everyone.

Troubleshoot Internet/Wi-Fi issues in Windows 11 24H2

Based on reports and our insight, you can try these workarounds and see what works for you.

Solution 1: Remove a service dependency from the registry

  1. Open the Registry Editor as an administrator.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WcmSvc.
  3. Find the called item DependentOnService.
  4. To delete WinHTTPAutoProxySvc from the list, only remaining RpcSs And NSI.
  5. Save the changes and restart your computer.

Solution 2: Enable the WinHTTP AutoProxy service

  1. Open the Registry Editor as an administrator.
  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinHttpAutoProxySvc.
  3. Find the mentioned item Start and change its value 4 (disabled) to 3 (manually).
  4. Save the changes and restart your computer.

Solution 3: Change the Windows Connection Manager service

  1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
  2. Type sc config wcmsvc depend= RpcSs/NSI and press Enter.
  3. Restart your computer.

Network sharing issue in Windows 11 24H2

There is another related issue where the PC does not appear in the network list or you cannot see other devices on the network. This makes it impossible to share files and printers between PCs.

This issue may be related to Function Discovery Resource Publication (FDResPub), which essentially keeps Windows 11 visible on the network. In some cases, FDResPub does not start automatically as it should. Changing the startup type from “Manual (Trigger Start)” to “Automatic” seems to work in some cases.

It’s unclear whether Microsoft is aware of these reports, but we’ve reached out to the company and our sources to understand what’s going on.

For now, you can try the solutions mentioned above or simply downgrade to Windows 11 23H2 and avoid Windows 11 24H2 for a while.
