More than three-quarters of Americans use artificial intelligence platforms in their daily lives without even knowing it.
The more interesting trend is how AI could impact our work and our businesses.
Purple Horizons’ headquarters may look like your everyday office, but that’s far from the truth.
Gianni Dalerta and Ralph Quintero call themselves ‘tinkerers’.
They’re just two guys determined to find new and progressive ways to help customers and businesses, and their new tool is artificial intelligence.
“This opened up a whole range of possibilities for us in the way we worked with companies,” Quintero explains.
They use AI with voice automated technology, which basically uses AI to talk.
“We’ve created business hotlines where someone can call and communicate with a smart concierge 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and it gives businesses the opportunity to really step up and better serve their customers” , said Quintero.
They have also used AI to assist with corporate events, creating a virtual avatar called BIBI.
“We instructed BIBI on how to communicate as an event moderator. You have to break down the topics, you have to ask questions, you have to keep it interesting,” Dalerta said.
NBC6 put BIBI to the test. Sophia Hernandez introduced herself as a reporter and BIBI responded: “Great to have you Sophia, thank you for participating. Now let’s brainstorm about some topics.”
The group spoke for about 10 minutes on a variety of topics. She asked questions and waited for our answers. She also jumped to each of the group members to keep the conversation going.
“We don’t know how she’s going to react, she’s not programmed with preset questions or anything like that,” Quintero said.
The realism, likability, and ease of communicating with and using AI is why National University and Pew Research Center say 77% of companies are using or exploring its use.
They include entrepreneurs like David Fano, whose company uses Teal AI to help individuals from the day they start working to the day they retire, specifically targeting resume building, LinkedIn and other recruiting requirements of jobs.
“It would be far too time-consuming to create a tailor-made CV for every job. But with AI, that becomes almost trivial, and it makes it very easy for people to shine and stand out, compared to the people who aren’t willing to put in the effort to do it,” Fano explains.
These techies believe that artificial intelligence is like a trusted employee or best friend, someone you can go back and forth with until your idea becomes a reality.
“It’s like a sketchbook, but with words,” says Dalerta. “Before, if I wanted to draw an image or a logo, I had to create 20 different iterations of that logo so I could figure out which logo I wanted to use and hone it in a little bit. But with AI, I could create 20 and then direct , I like that one, let’s go a little deeper.
They also believe it is a superpower available to everyone.
“If you don’t play with this technology, we don’t think it should replace what you do as a human, but if you don’t improve what you do as a human with this technology, someone else will do it and you will miss it,” said Dalerta.
However, there are many who are still skeptical about the use of AI.
Pew Research conducted a survey in which only 15% of Americans said they were more excited than concerned about using AI. That’s compared to 38% who are more concerned, and 46% who say they are an equal mix of both.
The National University says 52% of workers believe AI will take over their jobs. That same study shows that AI could eliminate 85 million jobs by 2025, but create 97 million new ones.
And 83% of companies say using AI in their business is a top priority.
“Anyone can handle this stuff and build interesting things and enrich themselves, while the other things were more challenging. If you want to get into crypto, you have to be a programmer and know your stuff,” Dalerta said.
According to the same survey, 33% of consumers say they use AI. But in reality, 77% of us are using AI, and we may not even know it.
You use AI in Photoshop, or you give it a few keywords and it can make a song about yourself.
It can also be useful for those who have a bright idea for a side hustle or passion project.
“I love word games, I play Wordle every morning and I had this concept for a word game for years. And I just had this PowerPoint deck, it was a Canva deck, with a concept for the game and I fed that into the AI, and I asked if it could help me turn this into an app,” Quintero said. It did, it gave me all the steps to follow, the flow of the game, and it gave me a prototype within an hour of playing. As of this morning, dozens of people are playing it and I’m having the time of my life playing it, and it’s something I created thanks to AI.”
The Pew Research Center conducted a survey last year to see how many of us can actually pinpoint what AI is and what isn’t.
Only 30% of Americans can point to all the ways AI is showing up in our daily lives, such as through wearable watches, chatbots, or even music recommendations.
