Sonic X Shadow Generations is available now for those who purchased the digital deluxe edition of the game, and will release for everyone else on Friday, October 25. The package contains a remaster of the 2011 game Sonic Generations and a brand new campaign starring Shadow the Hedgehog. All of you, Shadow Generations is the best Sonic game in the last 20 years, and I spent a good 20 hours running around the open zone trying to find all the collectibles I could. That means I can give you a few tips on how to best use your time as you try to reach that coveted 100 percent completion. Here are a few things you need to know before you jump in Shadow Generations.
Consider playing Sonic Generations First
This may seem like a wild thing to suggest, but so long Shadow Generations is easily the big selling point of the package, the original Sonic Generations is there too and it feels significantly worse to play. Part of the reason it felt bad to go back to was because I had just spent twenty hours in it Shadow Generations at that time and became accustomed to the tight controls. If you want to play both games, it might be worth jumping in Sonic Generations firstly, so you don’t have to go back to something that feels a little dated compared to its counterpart. If you’ve never played the original, it also helps with contextualization Shadow Generationsas Shadow’s story doesn’t do much to explain what’s going on with the blue blur and all his friends. It will also explain why you don’t actually fight Sonic in the campaign. Just something to consider.
Don’t try to make a perfect run the first time

If you see a machine part, grab it immediately
Some of the many collectibles you can find in Shadow Generations are bolts, screws, washers and other mechanical parts that lie around the White Space map. If you see one of these, stop what you’re doing and grab it. Even if you have to run around the map to find the right bouncer that will fly you to it or a floating platform that you can jump over to get to it, these little bastards are the biggest pain in the ass you’ll find in all of Europe . Shadow Generations. Unlike other collectibles that are on the map or easily visible, these pieces are tucked into the corners of the map and so small that you can miss them even from a bird’s eye view. There are 80 of them hidden around the world and by the time you get to those last 15 they have become truly scarce. Don’t risk forgetting where one is, grab it as soon as you see it.
Take screenshots of chests that you cannot currently open
By means of Shadow Generations you unlock treasure chests around the white space. Most are marked on the map; However, I came across a handful that were not labeled for some reason and had to look for them. You open these with keys found in stages and challenge levels, meaning you might come across a chest that you won’t be able to open until you’ve played a bit further. When this happens, try to take a screenshot of the area or make a note of where the chest is located, in case it doesn’t show up on the map for some reason.
Completing the game will make collecting easier
Once you’re done with the main story, you can still play levels, run through the white space and complete your collection. Shadow gains powers throughout the game that allow him to traverse different parts of the map, and without getting into spoilers, the last ability you obtain is actually an easy mode button for traversing. So while you should absolutely grab items when you see them, know that this power makes collecting items pretty painless.
Take the time to read Gerald’s diary
One type of collectible you’ll come across are pages from Doctor Gerald Robotnik’s diary. This is for the true lore-sickos who want a new look at Shadow’s creation, the Doctor’s descent into madness, and even a look at the family drama of series antagonist Doctor Eggman. You’ll find these pages about balloons floating around white space. Shoot them with a Chaos Spear attack and then you can read them in the collection room accessible from the pause menu.
Bosses and challenges in hard mode count towards the completion percentage
While you continue playing Shadow Generationsyou can view your completion percentage for all stages of the game in the Records menu. However, if you find that you’ve done everything but still don’t say you’ve reached 100 percent completion, you may find that the hard mode bosses and challenges count as separate stages from their normal difficulty counterparts. You can fight these bosses by activating Doom Zone via the Black Doom eyeball mechanism opposite the entrance to Space Colony Ark.
Sonic X Shadow Generations will get a new level later this year based on the upcoming ones Sonic the Hedgehog 3 filmwith Keanu Reeves portraying the anti-hero in the level. The film premieres and can be seen on December 20 Shadow as the main antagonist.
