Here are the seven things you need to know about the newly announced Destiny: Rising mobile game from NetEase and Bungie.
Officially unveiled on October 14, 2024, Destiny: Rising is a new free-to-play mobile game from NetEase and Bungie. Primarily developed by NetEase, this game is set in an alternate timeline, giving players a new perspective on Destiny’s history.
Before the official announcement, however, early reports hinted that Bungie was at some point heavily involved in the development of Destiny: Rising. Let’s take a look at the six most important things you need to know about the game.

Bungie, primarily developed by NetEase, has scaled back its involvement
Destiny: Rising is mainly developed by Chinese technology giant NetEase, with Bungie playing a supporting role. However, this was not always the case. In September 2024, The Game Post reported that Bungie was heavily involved early on and contributed so much to the development that they attempted to renegotiate the contract to become a co-developer.
When those negotiations failed, Bungie significantly reduced its involvement, allowing NetEase to take full control. Bungie’s current role is more limited, mainly providing narrative guidance and visual references for characters, weapons, and other assets.

Set in an alternate timeline, not connected to the Destiny 2 canon
One of the most important aspects of Destiny: Rising is that it takes place in an alternate timelineseparate from the main storyline of Destiny 2. Here’s what the developer has to say about it:
“Destiny: Rising takes place in an alternate timeline, many years before Destiny 1 & 2. This timeline allows for another exploration of how humanity began to rise from the ashes of the Collapse when invaders from beyond the stars put an end to what was once a golden age.”

Story set in the Warlord era
Destiny: Rising takes players back to the Warlord era– a turbulent period before the Guardians and their iconic classes (Titans, Warlocks and Hunters) were fully established.
While this era is mentioned in Destiny’s lore, Destiny: Rising offers players a deeper, more immersive exploration, offering a new perspective for long-time fans.
“The fallen deity, the Traveler, used his light to create Spirits who sought out humanity’s fallen inhabitants and brought them back as Light Bearers, immortals with unique abilities.”

Iconic heroes return, plus new faces
Unlike the traditional class system in Destiny 2, Destiny: Rising introduces hero characters from the Destiny universe. NetEase has already confirmed some well-known characters such as Kabr, Ikora Rey and Iron Lord Jolder. In addition to these fan favorites, Destiny: Rising brings a series of new Lightbearers to the game.
Players take on the role of a customizable main character named ‘Wolf’. You can personalize Wolf’s gender and appearance to provide a customized experience. Each Lightbearer in the game has unique abilities related to a special feature called the “Relic”, which defines their strengths and playing style.
